Books to help you find NEW trails
Posted: 1/15/2016
As an ardent outdoors person, I love spending time in nature. Whether I’m hiking, biking or skiing, I’m a happy camper. Oh yes, I love camping, too. But, I’m also an avid reader. So when my favorite activities collide, I’m in heaven.  Two of my favorite hiking books are written by local authors. And they both feature trails in Cleveland Metroparks.  Even though we all start out with good intentions, we tend to get stuck in a rut (pun intended) and stick to the same trails. This year, make expl...

Top Five Visionary Quotes From Early Cleveland Metroparks History
Posted: 10/5/2015
As an out-of-town transplant one of the first things a native Clevelander showed me when I moved into town was Cleveland Metroparks. She was very proud of the Park District and rightly so. But many native Clevelanders are unaware of how unique and progressive this extensive Park District was and is today.   It started with the foresight, determination and hard work of a few hardy souls. If not for these forward thinkers we would not have the wonderful parks we value today. As you head outside to sp...

OK, I admit it. I’m not a runner.

OK, I admit it. I’m not a runner. Yes, I dabble in jogging a few miles, a few times a week purely for exercise – but a serious runner I am not. So when I decided to run my first 5K a few years ago, I figured I’d better make it a good one as it would probably be my first and last race. I found the perfect race, the Healthy Planet, Healthy People 5K Run/Walk. It’s a fun and challenging race for all skill levels on a beautiful course. As there would be both runners and walkers, depending on how I ran/jogge...

Penguins Are Making A Comeback

You may think Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s newest exhibit is a bit formal, but that’s only because the birds appear to be wearing tuxedos. Yes, you guessed it!  After 13 years, adorable waddling penguins are back at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo – though just through September. As you enter the Zoo, life-size cutouts of the 17 different penguin species  placed throughout the Zoo will guide you to the new Penguin Shores exhibit near the Grin ‘n’ Bear Eats  area in the Zoo’s Northern Trek area. &n...

Facts and Fiction Behind Groundhog Day
Posted: 1/23/2015
So what are we observing every February 2? Groundhog Day actually began in Pennsylvania in the 18th century when the Pennsylvania Germans celebrated an ancient European tradition wherein a badger predicted the weather. If the badger, then in later years a groundhog, sees his shadow, meaning the sun is shining, we are in for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow or it is overcast, winter is over. February 2 was selected as it’s the mid-point between the winter solstice and the spring equ...

Swimming Suits Cleveland Metroparks

Water. On a sweltering summer day, cool water beckoning from a neighborhood pool or one of our many lakes can be all that stands between you and a mid-summer meltdown. However, to many, the water is both alluring and scary.  Statistics show that only 56 percent of Americans can perform the five core swimming skills, also known as “water competency,” including jumping or stepping into water over one’s head, returning to the surface to tread water or float for one minute, circling around and identify...

Leaf Man
Posted: 5/2/2014
What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you see the swoosh – Nike, the bullseye – Target, the golden arches – McDonalds… the Leaf Man -  Cleveland Metroparks, of course. You know, Cleveland Metroparks well-recognized logo – that we at the Park District fondly call, the Leaf Man. You may think Cleveland Metroparks logo is as old as the dirt/earth it represents.  But, surprisingly, you would be wrong. In 1975 the powers that be, namely Cleveland Metropolitan Park District’s then-new...

You're Not Alone
Posted: 3/14/2014
It was a long hard winter, but spring is on its way and warm weather is right around the corner, right? Could it actually be warming up? I can’t wait until the first really warm day of the year. After all the snow, ice and single digit temperatures, on the first nice day I want to do something outside. Swimming! No, still too cold. Fly a kite! No, not windy enough. I know, how about a drive through Cleveland Metroparks. I’m sure it will be the perfect day for a nice, leisurely drive through the Park. Wi...
