Cleveland Metroparks offers American Red Cross swimming lessons. Space is limited and participants may only register for one class per session. After successful completion of a class, participants may register for the next session.
Classes are held weekdays or weekends and meet 10 times per session.
Requests for private swim lessons will be accepted 3 weeks in advance through the Learn-to-Swim coordinator. Private lessons are $22.50 per session up to one hour. Private swim lessons are to be taught only by Cleveland Metroparks Aquatics Division employees.
Learn to Swim Classes
American Red Cross Lifeguard Re-certification Course
March 8 Time: 1 - 4 p.m. or
April 12 Time: 1 - 4 p.m.
Location: Lakewood High School Pool
This one-day course is for Lifeguards who are currently certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid, and or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer who need to update their skills to maintain their certification. Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer certifications are valid for 2 years. Following a review, participants will take a written exam and rescue skills will be evaluated.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Training
May 12 - 28 Time: 4 - 8 p.m.
Location: Tuesdays at Lakewood High School Pool and Thursdays at Cleveland Metroparks Park Operations
This course is to train instructor candidates to teach aquatics courses including, basic-level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Attendant, Lifeguard management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne Pathogens Training, and Basic Water Rescue.
• Must be at least 17 years old on or before last day of course
• Possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate or have successfully completed an accepted Lifeguarding course within the last four years
• Successfully pass precourse written examination and evaluation of skills demonstrated through scenarios.
American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding Skills Module
May 15 Time: 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. or

This one day course is for individuals who currently possess an American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid certification and need to update their knowledge and skills to become certified to work at a waterfront location. Successful participant will be certified in Waterfront Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Valid for 2 years.
American Red Cross Pool/Waterfront Lifeguard Training
May 18 - 22, Monday - Friday Time: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
May 11 - 23, Mondays, Wednesdays & Saturdays Time: 4 - 8 p.m. Mondays/Wednesdays, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturdays

The American Red Cross Pool/Waterfront Lifeguarding course teaches participants the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, preventing drowning and injuries. Upon successful completion, participants receive American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications. Participants must be 16 years old on or before the last day of the course. Prerequisites include a swimming skills test. Call a lifeguard supervisor at 440-331-8111 for further information. American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training
March 7, June 12 or October 16
Time: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Season Pass Holder: $55
Non-Season Pass Holder: $75
March 7 and October 16 classes will be held at Cleveland Metroparks Park Operations.
June 12 class will be held at the Ranger Training Center in Mill Stream Run Reservation.
Participants 11 to 15 years old learn the skills and confidence to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. Through hands-on activities, interactive video and lively discussions, this course teaches young people how to:
• Care for children and infants
• Be good leaders and role models
• Make good decisions and solve problems
• Keep the children they babysit and themselves safe
• Handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents
• Write resumes and interview for jobs

American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding Workshop
July 20 - 24 Time: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Season Pass Holder: $40
Non-Season Pass Holder: $60
Cost includes materials and certificate. Please pre-register at Ledge Pool. Class size is limited to 20 participants.
• Gives youths, ages 11 - 15, an opportunity to jump start into a lifeguarding job. The workshop provides a foundation of aquatic and leadership knowledge, attitudes and skills.
• Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
• Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.
• Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.

American Red Cross Pet First Aid
February 21, or Time: 9 a.m. - noon
September 12 or November 14 Time: 1 - 4 p.m.
Cost: $45 for Cat OR Dog Book
$60 for Cat AND Dog Book
Location: Park Operations Administration, Rocky River Reservation
Teaches emergency procedures and healthcare tips for cats and dogs.
