Research: Building scientific capacity for biomonitoring in the Bateke Plateaux, Gabon
Species/Topic: Multiple Species
Abstract: The purpose of this project is to demonstrate that overseas training opportunities need not be a prerequisite for the maturation of Gabonese conservation geneticists and that critical research needed to enact informed management can be conducted within national institutions. This will be done using an inquiry-based practicum at the Universita des Sciences et Techniques Misuku incorporating data collected by national and WCS biomonitoring teams. These surveys are conducted around Bata Plateau National Park currently on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The outputs from this endeavor will be integral to future funding solicitations aiming to establish a lasting national conservation genetics program.
