Research: Status of the Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Species/Topic: Golden monkey (Cercopithecus mitis kandti)
Abstract: With bright golden body, cheeks, and frontal diadem, it belongs to the old world monkeys. The golden monkey is endemic to the Albertine Rift with the only confirmed presence in the Virunga Volcanoes including Volcanoes National Park (VNP) in Rwanda especially in the Bamboo and Hypericum zones. The golden monkey is listed as endangered by the IUCN since 1994 up to now. This project will be conducted in VNP, Rwanda; and aims to establish the current status of the golden monkey as well as to provide a management plan for this species. Line-transect surveys will be widely conducted in July and August 2007. Results will determine population density, IUCN threat category; help park manager decision making processes, and will be published and disseminated during international conferences.
