For Teachers: A Bite Sized Look at Sharks: 3-5 Ohio Standards Covered

Adaptations

Look at your teeth in the mirror. Your front teeth - the incisors - are shaped to bite and cut food while your back teeth - the molars - are shaped to crush and grind food. And, you can use utensils, like knives and forks, to help manage different types of food. It's the polite thing to do. But sharks don't worry about table manners!

Instead, sharks have different types of teeth suited to different types of food. That's called adaptation, when specially shaped body parts help an animal survive in its natural habitat.

Which shark species belongs to which type of tooth? Click on each tooth to find out. You'll also discover how these adaptations resemble common kitchen utensils, suited to specialized diets.
