Zoo Science & Management Course
We regret to announce there will be no Zoo Science & Management Course offered through Kent State University in 2007. We apologize for the inconvenience and will post details regarding future directions for the course in 2008 as the information becomes available. Any questions or feedback may be directed to research@clevelandmetroparks.com.
Zoo Science & Management Course will offer students an intensive seminar-style course in issues surrounding zoos and conservation. The course is limited to 12 students and emphasizes reading, discussion and directed research. The textbook for the course will be: Building a Future for Wildlife: the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy, published by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA, 2005). This document outlines the role of zoos in wildlife conservation with a focus on both responsibilities and opportunities unique to zoological institutions. With the exception of the first day, one seminar will be scheduled on the morning of each day. Afternoons will be devoted to designing conservation research projects that directly link the Zoo’s collection and expertise to Zoo-supported conservation initiatives in the wild. Dr. Kristen Lukas, Curator of Conservation and Science at CMZ and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Anthropology Department at KSU, will direct the workshop (kel@clevelandmetroparks.com).
