Zookeeper's Field Journal

April 9, 2005

Today, I stayed back to be "Frog Mama"......and to recover. Last night I became very ill. Fever, chills, nausea........I couldn't make it in the forest today. A cold "bath" in the stream helped....but I think the only cure would be the luck of finding 6.5 more golden frogs.

Yesterday we came up with a plan to increase our chances of finding frogs. We decided to hire additional family/friends of Samwell to help us. We decided to pay them 6$ for a days collecting. We showed Samwell, Rapheal, Viojenes, and Carlos a map of the area to show where we cannot collect from (there are a few transects that are being monitored by a student and obviously we don't want to collect her frogs....if there are frogs). The teams split up. Samwell, Jeff, Nick, Linda, and Edgardo went to Rio Juan Julio and Raphael, Viojenes, and Carlos went to Rio Cuchirbo. About 4pm I saw the Panamanian group hiking towards camp.....with frogs!!!!!!!!!!! They had found several frogs (mostly males) from Rio Cuchirbo and an additional 0.1 from Rio Marta. Then "Team Gringo" came back with 2.1 from Rio Juan Julio!!!!! What a great day! We had too many males so unfortunately we had to send some back, but we kept 3.2 from Cuchirbo, 2.1 from Rio Juan Julio and 0.1 from Rio Marta.....so now we only need 0.2!!!!!! Tomorrow we will go back to Rio Juan Julio in hopes to find the girls we need.

Since the Panamaian team had found us most of the frogs we needed, and we wouldn't need them tomorrow, we decided to pay them 10$ each for their help.
