The Ecology and Conservation of Lions: Factors Affecting the Population Dynamics within the Samburu, Buffalo Springs, Shaba Ecosystem and their Surrounding Areas, Northern Kenya
Location: The Ewaso ecosystem, Samburu and Isiolo Districts, Kenya
Species: Lion (Panthera leo)
Abstract: The reduction in lion (Panthera leo) numbers in Africa is largely due to habitat loss and conflict with humans, and lions are a species whose distribution and conservation status is affected by such conflict. The predatory behaviour of lions in the Samburu / Buffalo Springs / Shaba ecosystem of Northern Kenya places them in an extremely vulnerable situation as they live in or adjacent to areas inhabited by nomadic people. The objective of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the population dynamics of the lions, in and around the reserves, which have been identified as highest priority areas for biodiversity conservation and research, and are critically important areas for lions and their dispersal.
