| The Mongoose Lemur (Eulemur mongoz): Re-assessment of Conservation Status and its Remaining Habitat in Northwest Madagascar |

| Abstract: Mongoose lemurs are found naturally in only a small region of the dry deciduous forest of northwest Madagascar and one protected area, Ankarafantsika National Park. Mongoose lemurs are considered Vulnerable, and possibly endangered, with declining populations. Threats to the species are ongoing, and the current population estimate is vague, at 1,000-10,000. Distributions and population densities for this species have not been reassessed in over a decade. I will collect census data to allow for the re-assessment of the conservation status of the mongoose lemur throughout fragments in its known range and also estimate lemur species diversity in each fragment. Habitat preferences for this species are not entirely known, so botanical sampling and environmental variables will be recorded and assessed for correlations with species presence. GIS maps will be produced for each fragment and used to determine conservation priorities for habitat in the region using gap and threat analysis. |
