| Population Dynamics and Distribution of Brown and Ring-tailed Lemurs at Berenty Reserve |

| Abstract: Since their introduction to Berenty reserve in 1974, brown lemurs have increased exponentially, forming a population that acts very unlike Brown lemurs in natural sympatry with Ring-tailed. One important variable affecting population dynamics at Berenty is water provisioning. The latter has been stopped from 2007. The growth of Brown lemur numbers at Berenty may threaten the long-term stability of Berenty ring-tailed population. The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the success of interventions to stabilize the population of brown lemurs and monitor the population dynamics of both species -- ring-tailed and brown lemurs- at Berenty reserve. This census will be crucial for assessing the success of the intervention of water provisioning removal in preventing the brown lemur population expanding further. If the efficacy is subject of doubts, then a more serious measure such as reproduction control would be projected. |
