| Abstract: Hunting and trade represent some of the greatest threats to wildlife in Vietnam. While the Vietnamese Government has been working to stop the wildlife trade in Vietnam with some success, additional support from the conservation sector is needed. ENV plans to expand its new strategic wildlife trade monitoring program to raise public awareness about wildlife trade issues, mobilize further public involvement, and strengthen public and government cooperation in combating the illegal wildlife trade. The program will build on ENV's efforts in 2007 to establish a nationwide network of active Wildlife Protection Volunteers, focusing this time on improved recruitment and training of volunteers, and enhanced coordination of their efforts. The program will target all wildlife trade hotspots throughout the country. By increasing the number of volunteers and business establishments complying with wildlife protection laws, ENV aims to encourage public participation in solving environmental issues, while decreasing the volume of illegally traded wildlife. |
