| Abstract: The need for this project was identified by the Sabah Wildlife Department as part of their ongoing efforts to develop adaptive management plans for nocturnal primates in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary (LKWS), the only terrestrial protected area under their jurisdiction. The Bornean slow loris and the Western tarsier occur in sympatry in the LKWS and competition should be expected between the two species threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation. Using a combination of radio-tracking and ecological and behavioral sampling, we will examine niche differentiation of these two primates in a fragment of lowland rainforest in Sabah, Malaysia. This will be the first study of the behavioral ecology of the Bornean slow loris and the first study of the Western tarsier since 1984. It will result in extensive capacity building within Sabah as well as a postgraduate qualification for the principal local investigator. |
