2012 GRANT RECIPIENT

Birute Galdikas
President, Orangutan Foundation International
Saving orangutans by safeguarding their habitat (SOS)
Location: Borneo, Indonesia
Species: Bornean orangutan
Abstract: Orangutans are in trouble. The destruction of Indonesia's rainforests and the killing of orangutans is pushing the orangutan species closer to extinction. The limited capacity of authorities to implement effective conservation programs and enforce environmental regulations has been a formidable barrier to their protection. Without intervention orangutans could be extinct in the wild in less than two decades. With the help of field investigation and reporting equipment purchased through this project, OFI’s forest and wildlife patrols will deter, detect and halt illegal resource extraction operators and wildlife poachers; prevent and fight forest fires; monitor the health of the forest ecosystem; and provide evidence to law enforcement partners to prosecute offenders and shut down illegal logging, mining, poaching and wildlife trade operations. This project will reduce human-orangutan conflicts, protect at-risk orangutan habitat, and support the survival of 6,000 wild orangutans living in and around Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesian Borneo.
