| Abstract: Slow lorises inhabit South and Southeast Asia and are globally threatened, with the Javan slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus) soon being uplisted as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Apart from habitat loss, trade for pets and traditional medicine is the main threat for slow lorises. In this project we want to assess the characteristics of wildlife trade in slow lorises (and other wildlife) by visiting wildlife markets in order to provide information necessary for effective law enforcement. As some wild slow loris populations persist in unprotected rural gardens and plantations we will visit local communities and investigate their perceptions towards and use of slow lorises and wildlife in general. Based on the results we will plan, conduct and evaluate education events and discuss people's ideas and solutions to conservation problems. Capacity building, supporting conservation networks, and dissemination of results to the scientific community and the public will increase the project's long-term conservation value.
