2006 GRANT RECIPIENTS

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
Eastern Plains Garter Snake Head-starting Program
The Eastern Plains Garter Snake is listed as a state endangered species in Ohio and can only be found in an isolated location in Wyandot County in Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area (KPWA). Cleveland Metroparks Zoo participates in a captive breeding and release program to bolster the population at KWPA, while also studying the species reproductive biology, growth rates, diet and longevity.

Project Golden Frog
Feed the Frogs Campaign
A deadly fungal disease, called chytrid, appeared in Panama while the El Valle Amphibian Conservation Center was still under construction, and forced conservationists to take drastic measures to save the country’s endemic frog species from certain extinction. Hundreds of individuals were brought into captivity and required round the clock care and feeding.
