Research and conservation of the Sea turtles in the Peninsula de Paria
Study Site/Location: Sucre State, Venezuela
Species: Sea Turtles
Abstract: This project, undertaken in alliance with WIDECAST (Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network) aims to safeguard sea turtle populations in one of the most important nesting grounds in mainland Venezuela. All of the five species of Sea turtles that inhabit Venezuela are in danger of extinction throughout their range due to human over-exploitation. The project will utilize an integrated approach to sea turtle conservation, which includes research, technical training, local community involvement and environmental education programs. This project can serve as a model for the development of similar projects in the region, as it is the first effort to establish long-term, community-based research and monitoring for Sea turtles in Venezuela.
