Socio-ecological investigation into the subsistence hunting on large mammals in timber concessions along the Las Piedras river
Study Site/Location: Madre de Dios, Peru
Species: Large mammals
Abstract: This project will investigate the ecological consequences, as well as the socio-economic and cultural drivers of subsistence hunting on large mammals in timber concessions. Census techniques will be used to access large mammal abundance, density and community structure at six sites along the Las Piedras River, Peru. The market niche for bushmeat and non-market incentives to hunting will also be examined. The project will provide Peruvian management organizations with valuable information which can be utilized in the "ecological-economic zoning" of the area and the development of regulations governing the management of timber concessions.
