| Abstract: The white-winged guan is a highly endangered bird endemic to Peru. The main goal of this project is to determine the conservation status of this species through the evaluation of its distribution area. The work will provide an accurate estimate of the wild population size and determine the specific threats that the species is facing. Through this work, suggestions regarding conservation policies can be made to the Peruvian government. |
Project Update: November 2004 Thirty ravines in the White-winged Guan distribution area have been visited to assess the wild populations of the species, and an estimate of 42 White-winged Guan has been observed. In addition to bird counts, evaluations were begun on its habitat conservation status, reintroduction possibilities, threats, and the possibility of developing ecotourism projects or creating another private protected area. The results of these evaluations will be very useful for directing the future conservation actions and management to save this species. Beside these surveys, we have also visited the Tumbes reserve zone because locals reported seeing White-winged Guans there. The protected area is very close to the locality where the first White-winged Guan was collected in 1876. The results showed that there were no White-winged Guans in this reserve zone, but that populations of Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens) are present (this guan is similar in size to the White-winged Guan but has no white feathers on the wings). |
