The Effects of Fragmented and Degraded Habitats on the Long-distance Vocal Communication of Golden Lion Tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia)
Location: Atlantic Forest, Brazil
Species: Golden Lion Tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia)
Abstract: This project will investigate whether L. rosalia adults respond with different territorial behaviors to the calls of neighbors and strangers, to assess if tamarins can range the distance of a caller, and to assess if sound degradation related to anthropogenic disturbances affects theses abilities. The results of this research can help management of forest fragments where captive animals have been introduced (or reintroduced), and improve playback methods used to estimate population density of this species.
