2005 GRANT RECIPIENT

Susana González
Research and Conservation Education at San Miguel National Park
Location: San Miguel National Park, Rocha, Uruguay
Species: Large Mammals and Environmental Education
Abstract: San Miguel National Park encompasses 1557 hectares and a sample of the biodiversity that remains in the surrounding areas in Uruguay. During the last four years a large mammal inventory has been performed using non-invasive sampling techniques including tracks, trials, feces, and remote camera trapping. This project will continue this survey using remote camera traps to increase the image bank. A "Large Mammals of San Miguel National Park" field guide will be designed with the best images and a network of signs will be distributed in the park area showing the species and their habitat. Fecal samples will be analyzed using molecular genetics in order to identify species taxonomy and their ecological role in the ecosystem by determining the main components of their diet.
