Effect of Habitat Structure on Primate Community Richness and Composition in Piagaçu Purus Reserve, Amazônia, Brazil
Location: Iguazú Piagaçu Purus Reserve, Amazônia, Brazil
Species: Neotropical primates
Abstract: Two-thirds of all Brazilian primate species occur in the Amazon, in complex community assemblages that vary in richness and composition. Tropical rain forests have pronounced gradients in biotic and abiotic factors, and knowledge of the effect of habitat structure on the occurrence of a species is extremely important for understanding local and regional differences in primate community richness and composition. Maps of species distribution based on species-specific relationships with the habitat provide a powerful tool for developing conservation strategies. The main goal of this project is to construct maps of the probability of occurrence of primate species within Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve as a function of habitat structure, vegetation type and topographic and hydrologic information collected through line transect surveys. This information will contribute important biodiversity data to a management plan for the Piagaçu-Purus SDR.
