| Abstract: The peninsular pronghorn is a critically endangered desert mammal, with approximately 150 free-living individuals in the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, in South Baja California, Mexico. During the last 9 years, the Peninsular Pronghorn Recovery Program (PPRP) has successfully reproduced this species in captivity. The growing pronghorn population will shortly be reintroduced to areas of the El Vizcaíno desert, some of which are inhabited (communities of 500-10,000 inhabitants). The local public is not fully aware of the critical importance of this vanishing species and traditional subsistence and trophy poaching of pronghorn persists in the area. The Peninsular Pronghorn Traveling Suitcase for Environmental Education is a specifically designed itinerant educational workshop with which we intend to visit all the schools within the Reserve and make children, teachers and parents aware of the biological, ecological, economic and social importance of the pronghorn, and how to take care of it and the desert habitat. |
