| The Relative Impacts of Management Plans for Subsistence Hunting on Tegu Lizards (Tupinambis rufescens) and Collared Peccaries (Tayassu tajacu) in the Bolivian Chaco |

| Abstract: During a decade of work in the Bolivian Chaco with Wildlife Conservation Society and the Capitania del Alto y Bajo Isoso, I have developed management plans for subsistence hunting of tegu lizards and collared peccaries approved by the Government in 2006. As part of my doctoral research at Texas A&M University, I will evaluate how the size, sex ratios and stage structure of both species' populations vary in response to management plans across 25 communities. I have coordinated training and participation by indigenous Parabiologists, and they will be involved in all aspects of this work. Methods include analysis of harvest data, and field work to estimate population densities. My replicated design will allow comparisons of population variation among sites, and allow us to elucidate factors that drive population fluctuations. This project is crucial to help indigenous people make decisions to ensure the sustainable use of these species in the Chaco. |
