| Abstract: The spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is a flagship species endangered by deforestation, agricultural development, mining and hunting. In relation to the distribution range and population, Peru has a larger population of spectacled bears than other countries. Nevertheless, few projects currently exist on T. ornatus research and conservation in Peru, and those that do focus on the dry forest (northwest) and cloud forest (southeast). Because of the variety of ecosystems and territories that can support spectacled bears in Peru, it is necessary to carry out more studies to know the occurrence, demography and ecology of the species across the country. The aim of our study is to measure the spectacled bear’s population abundance in a mountain forest and paramo area in the Peruvian northeast. Methods will include indirect evidence evaluations, the use of camera trapping, and capture/recapture methodology. Results will increase the knowledge on distribution and conservation of the spectacled bear in northern Peru. |
