Abstract: The Chocó is a world-recognized Conservation Hotspot with exceptional endemism and diversity at risk from deforestation. Our project combines top level, multidisciplinary scientific research with on-the-ground training, capacity building, and education to achieve lasting conservation in the Ecuadorian Chocó. Our approach on both social and scientific levels is based on direct involvement of local Ecuadorians. On a scientific level, we are implementing projects focused on the conservation of high-profile, endangered species like the Long-wattled Umbrellabird and Banded Ground-cuckoo. Our long-term scientific goal is an expansive understanding of Chocó rainforests that will provide a solid foundation for conservation initiatives. On a social level, we train local residents and university students as field biologists, and provide environmental education in schools, community presentations, and hands-on workshops.
