Abstract: The aims of this project are to determine the current prevalence of the chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) in amphibian populations throughout Peru. As of this time, there is very little information known about the status of this disease in Peru, a country renowned for its high amphibian diversity and endemism. A sampling survey will be carried out at various sites dispersed along the north to south axis of Peru, from the 5th of June until the 15th of August. Sampling will consist of identification to species level, locality determination, snout-vent length measurements, and a skin swabbing with a cotton tip applicator. Cottons swabs will be preserved in labeled vials containing alcohol, and taken to our lab for PCR-based analysis. Standard statistical tests will be used to test for differences in disease prevalence among species, habitats, and locality types.
