Abstract: The Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) is the most endangered wolf in the world and bi-national efforts strive to recover this species in the wild in the United States and Mexico. Reintroduction began in 1998 in Arizona and success has hinged on husbandry standards resulting in the rearing of wolves behaviorally suitable for reestablishment in the wild. The Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan (MWSSP) implemented husbandry training workshops in 1998-2000. Reintroduced captive-reared wolves are hunting natural prey, avoiding humans, and rearing wild-born young. Mexico has recently identified three areas within the Sierra Madre Oriental and Occidental for releases. Our Mexican colleagues have requested that we reconvene the workshop – both to meet the needs of their own institutions and to benefit the reintroduction of the endangered Mexican gray wolf in their country. This project will help Mexican colleagues to attend a two-day MWSSP Husbandry Training Workshop in 2007.
