Seafood Watch

The oceans supply us with food, help regulate our climate, are a source of recreation, and provide a livelihood for millions of people. But our seas are not the infinite bounty they appear to be. Today, oceans are affected negatively by human activities in a number of ways. For this reason, CMZ partners with the Monterey Bay Aquarium to educate guests about the importance of maintaining healthy marine environments.

Among the many factors influencing our oceans, the effects of overfishing pose a substantial threat. Developed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium in conjunction with marine scientists and representatives of the fishing industry, the Seafood Watch card is a wallet-size guide that ranks the sustainability of popular seafood choices in categories such as "Best Choices", "Good Alternatives", or "Avoid". This simple, straightforward format makes it easy for responsible consumers to utilize the card when ordering seafood in a restaurant or purchasing seafood at the market.

Zoo guests are encouraged to make the "Best Choices" — purchasing seafood that are sustainably harvested or are caught and farmed in environmentally friendly ways.

Aramark, the Zoo's food service provider, utilizes the Seafood Watch program when creating menu offering’s for our guests and has been doing so for quite some time.

Pick up your Seafood Watch card in the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building at the Zoo or visit www.montereybayaquarium.org.
