Classroom Programs for Grades 1-3
Connections to Africa (for students in grades 1-3)
Collected Elephant Observation Data (XLS file)
In conjunction with the opening of African Elephant Crossing, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is excited to offer this new program for grades 1-3.
This program allows your students to visit the entire exhibit while learning how living things, including people, interact with the environment.
Through the use of provided research equipment, this inquiry-driven, self-guided program will help your students build a connection to African
animals by asking questions about how they live and what they need to survive.
Inquiry backpacks for use by you and your chaperones are available to your group for 90 minutes, although the program may not take the entire time. Backpacks must be reserved ahead of time by calling 216-635-3391. The backpacks contain step-by-step program instructions along with several handy tools that will help your students with their discoveries. Click to see materials list.
Teacher kits containing lesson plans and hands-on materials for use in your classroom are available for check-out to you 2 weeks prior to your field trip date. Kits must be reserved ahead of time by calling 216-635-3391. Click to see materials list.
To best prepare for this innovative experience, participating teachers are strongly encouraged to attend a Connections to Africa Teacher Workshop prior to their scheduled field trip date.
