The RainForest showcases more than 10,000 plants and over 600 animals from the jungles of Asia, Africa and the Americas. This unique two-acre, two-level exhibit is one of the largest of its kind in the country.
The RainForest's naturalistic settings include a 25-foot waterfall, a research hut, the Discovery Center, a tropical rainstorm exhibit with thunder and lightning effects, a weather station and other interactive exhibits.
The Mission of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's RainForest:
There is perhaps no more significant environmental issue today than the conservation of the world's tropical rain forests. It is an issue that zoos, through leadership in education and preservation efforts, have a unique opportunity, and a duty, to present.
The challenge is to faithfully depict the amazing diversity of the world's three major rain forests: Africa, Asia and South America. Often called "the lungs of the world," these forests generate an estimated 20 percent of the world's oxygen and are home to more than one-half of the earth's animal and plant species, yet they cover just six percent of the earth's surface.
The RainForest at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is unique in the scope and variety of its exhibits. This "living museum" features a rich diversity of animals and plants from all tropical rain forests.
By bringing the wonder of the tropical rain forests to millions of visitors, The Rainforest increases public awareness of the value of these precious sanctuaries of life, and the urgency of their protection.
