Remembering the 'American da Vinci'

The death of legendary Cleveland artist Viktor Schreckengost over the weekend brought an end to a brilliant career, but his legacy will live on through the masterpieces he created for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The Search for an American Toad

Back in August we went to an evening event at North Chagrin Nature Center and I spent the majority of the time scoping the pond for frogs. I was so excited to finally catch this American toad! After my mom took this picture, I released him back into the pond. Made my whole night!

Zoo's Amphibian Keeper Hopping to It

As most of you already know, 2008 has been designated as Year of the Frog by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to mark a major conservation effort to address the amphibian extinction crisis. I've already received photos and updates from Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's amphibian keeper, Kathy Krynak, who has kicked off her Year of the Frog efforts right here in Northeast Ohio in early January with several talks addressing the global amphibian crisis.

Takin' it to the Streets

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's amphibian keeper, Kathy Krynak, has been doing double duty lately educating the public on the global plight of amphibians. Yesterday morning, January 14, she was joined by husband and Cleveland Metroparks Naturalist Tim Krynak and Biodiversity Alliance conservation program coordinator Cathi Lehn for a discussion, "Learning from Amphibians," which aired on 90.3 WCPN (listen to the archived audio stream). And, yesterday evening, I had the opportunity to attend a lively discussion on the same topic, also lead by Kathy and Tim, at Science Café Cleveland at Great Lakes Brewing Company.

Stay tuned here for updates on upcoming amphibian activities in Northeast Ohio.

Start Leaping into Year of the Frog at Great Lakes Brewery

Join Kathy Krynak, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Amphibian Keeper, and Tim Krynak, Cleveland Metroparks Naturalist, on January 14, 2008 for Science Café Cleveland at Great Lakes Brewing Company. Kathy and Tim will be discussing the global amphibian crisis in two sessions, 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (details). Reservations are requested (information on how to reserve a spot). Amphibians all over the world are in grave danger of a mass extinction. Come learn what is thought to be causing the global mass extinction, why we should care about these rapid population declines, and what we all can do to help avert them.

Science Café Cleveland is a lively, informal scientific discussion in an inviting atmosphere of food and drink that takes place on the second Monday of each month at the brewpub downstairs at Great Lakes Brewing Company (2516 Market Ave, Cleveland).
