The Smell of Spring at the Zoo

Once again, the question will be asked: what does the Zoo do with all the poo? We sell it, of course!  With the spring comes the first ZooPoo compost sale. Now is your chance to purchase a bulk scoop. Find out how.

Spider Tortoise Hatchling - a Repeat Success!

About a year has passed since Cleveland Metroparks Zoo hatched its first Northern spider tortoise, and we've done it again! A baby spider tortoise, hatched on St. Patrick's Day, has become the fourth of its subspecies (Pyxis arachnoids brygooi) ever to be hatched at a North American zoo. The new arrival gives the the Zoo's RainForest one of the largest populations of Northern spider tortoises in the country. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo remains the only facility to have successfully hatched the subspecies under artificial light only. Check out the exclusive photos.

Can you name that frog?

In a few short weeks we will be having April showers and the evenings will once again be filled with the choruses of frogs and toads. Maybe you can pick out the "peep" of a spring peeper and the loud, guttural bellow of an American bullfrog, but what about the sounds of Ohio's other 12 anuran species? The USGS Frog Quiz website has hundreds of froggy sound files and is a fun way to quickly and accurately learn how to identify and test your frog calling knowledge.

Learning about Ohio's Amphibians

I attended Edgardo Griffith's talk at Cleveland Museum of Natural History in February. In addition to learning about the frogs of Panama, I learned that Ohio is home to 25 salamander species!
