Aldabra Tortoises Return to Their Summer Home

So, how many grown men does it take to move a tortoise? More than you might think!

Return to Nature(scape)

We just received an update on the continuation of an activity that Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's teen volunteers took part in last year. It comes to us from Zoo Crew volunteer Danny DiMarino, a tenth grader at Holy Name High School. He and eight other Zoo Crew volunteers got their hands dirty as they helped out in a Tremont neighborhood.

2009 UltraWalk for WCAS Takes Place Saturday, May 23

You don't have to be a topnotch birder, or a birder at all to contribute to the Rocky River IBA (Important Bird Area) Breeding Bird Survey! If you like to walk, join the Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society and walk to support the conservation of the Rocky River valley! Participate in or sponsor the 2009 WCAS UltraWalk on Saturday, May 23, to help raise funds for the IBA Breeding Bird Survey. If you can't do the walk, you can still make a pledge to support the project!

FLUTTER! is a Photographer's Paradise (a Gallery)

Every year around this time, I go out on a photo reconnaissance mission to gather early shots of our summer exhibits before they open to the public - on May 21. Yesterday, I sneaked into the Zoo's Public Greenhouse to see if any of our FLUTTER! butterflies had taken flight yet. Success! Not only were there stunning new butterflies about, but there were spectacular new blooms everywhere. It's a visual delight for those addicted to the "macro" setting on their camera.

Camels (and Camel Rides!) Return to Australian Adventure May 9

Three dromedary camels return to their summertime home in Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's Australian Adventure on Friday, May 8. And with the return of the camels comes the return of camel rides! Starting Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m., camel rides will be offered to Zoo visitors at $4 per person and $6 for a photo.

This weekend at the Zoo also includes the following special events: Zoo Horticulture's Annual Plant Sale (May 9-10), International Migratory Bird Day (May 9) and Mother's Day at the Zoo (May 10, with free Zoo admission for all moms).

Just in Time for Mother's Day: Baby Langur Photos

baby Francois' langurNo baby goggles needed here! The Zoo announces the birth of a baby Francois' langur in conjunction with Mother's Day weekend. Could the timing be any better? I had a chance to steal away from my desk last week and get some exclusive shots of the cutest little head of bright orange hair (the baby langur), now on exhibit in The RainForest at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Stop by. You can't miss it.

How Can Bowling Rhinos Promote Mother's Day AND Help Manage a Species?

black rhino, Zuri with papier mache bowling ballTo promote Mother's Day and the upcoming fundraiser Bowling for Rhinos, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's three female black rhinos took part in a special enrichment demonstration on May 6 -- they went bowling with huge papier-mâché bowling pins and a bowling ball filled with treats. We caught all the action on camera and put it in a photo gallery for you. We also decided to use the rhino "bowling" to highlight one of the Zoo's important Conservation & Science projects.

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA): 'Celebrating a Decade of Primate Conservation and Rehabilitation'

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) will stage the 10th anniversary PASA 2009 Management Workshop for the first time outside of Africa, from May 19-21 in Columbus, Ohio. As part of this historic meeting, the Columbus Zoo will present a public event at the Ohio State University Fawcett Center on May 21, 2009.

Bowling WITH Rhinos

Here's an exclusive heads-up for readers of The Roar Report. In preparation for Mother’s Day weekend and the annual Bowling for Rhinos fundraiser, black rhino "Inge" and her two daughters, "Zuri" and "Kibibi" will take their horns to some human-sized, treat-filled papier mâché bowling pins at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6. Whether the mother-daughter team will use their horns to cut open the pins, their feet to smash them or a giant ball to knock them over remains unknown, but last year, Kibibi crushed and chewed up the bowling ball (mind you, it was also papier mâché).

Mother’s Day at the Zoo is Sunday, May 10. All moms receive free Zoo admission that day, and narrated tram tours will highlight some of the Zoo's popular moms and babies.

And Saturday, May 16, the Zoo and the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers present the annual Bowling for Rhinos fundraiser (info and tickets) from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at Cloverleaf Lanes in Independence.
