Nestlé Commits to Ending the Deforestation of Rainforests

Want to make your grocery store selections more eco-friendly? Next time, reach for candy, snacks and other products that are palm oil-free or use sustainable palm oil. What is palm oil? Palm oil is the oil extracted from the fruit of palm trees, which are farmed extensively in Southeast Asia. These areas have lost so much forest to palm plantations that biodiversity there is at risk, including declining populations of orangutans, whose forest habitats are being lost to make room for palm plantations.

Zoo-Supported Asian Turtle Program Helps Create New Resources to Combat Turtle Crisis

Asia is home to nearly one-quarter of all tortoises and freshwater turtles in the world. Over half of Asia's 90 species are now considered endangered, a crisis fueled primarily by the unsustainable trade in turtles for food markets and traditional medicine. To help address the Asian Turtle Crisis, the Zoo's Asian Turtle Program (ATP) works in collaboration with other partners in Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar.

Resources to Help Wildlife Impacted by Gulf Oil Spill

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's mission to improve the future for wildlife has never been more important than it is right now as we're starting to see devastating images of animals caught in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. For our Zoo visitors, web audience and people in our local community who are wondering how they can help save wildlife affected by the disaster, we'd like to share with you information compiled by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA).

From an AZA press release: "AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are mobilizing to help save wildlife impacted by the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil spill which began on April 20, 2010. Zoos and aquariums have been identified by key Federal agencies as important partners in animal rescue and rehabilitation for the Gulf's wildlife." On a special page on the AZA website, you will find links for wildlife statistics, information on efforts already undertaken by zoos and aquariums in the Gulf region (some are accepting donations) and information from Federal Agencies on the spill response. The page (http://www.aza.org/oilspill/) will be updated regularly.

Our friends at WKYC have also addressed this issue in an article on the WKYC website with links to websites and information about how you can help.
