Fulton Road Bridge Opens to the Public, a Video Tribute

The Fulton Road Bridge construction is finally complete and the Zoo and its Old Brooklyn neighborhood are reconnected with the local Cleveland community. The opening ceremony created a sense of nostalgia that we don't usually witness in our busy super highway and online-connected lives these days. We wanted to share it in a sort of video "love letter" to the bridge.

On May 2, 2007, we said "bye bye" to the Fulton Road Bridge in an explosion heard 'round the Zoo and the local neighborhood. During construction, we made sure our visitors knew it was still easy to reach the Zoo through alternate routes and hoped that everyone would bear with us and the Ohio Department of Transportation as the new bridge took shape overhead. And what a bridge it is! Maintaining the beauty of its original arches but with new scenic overlooks, beautiful retro-styled streetlamps and a new bike lane, the bridge is now complete and open to traffic as of July 9. We took some video during the opening ceremony that featured several speakers and a parade of antique cars and edited it together as a little tribute. Happy viewing and happy travels!

I know there is still some 'clean-up' that needs to be completed from the project, however, I was curious as to whether there were any plans for 'underneath' the bridge. Will you replace the food stand that once stood en route to Northern Trek? Any future exhibit?

Hi Benny, thanks for the post and your questions. Under the 'big' bridge is another bridge known as the "Old Historic Bridge" that is currently being restored and renovated so that the Zoo can once again offer tram service to Northern Trek. As of right now, we do not have a completion date on this construction. Also, next year, we plan to have an updated food service facility under the Fulton Road Bridge, but on the other side of the road to Northern Trek. We are told it will be bigger and better than the one that used to be there.
