A lot goes on behind the scenes at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Most people are unaware of the many conservation research projects the Zoo is involved in. One of the best resources for that research is the Zoo's on site library, headed by another great resource, Zoo Librarian and Media Specialist Jason Schafer!
Name: Jason Schafer
Residence: Cleveland (Tremont)
Hometown: Wheeling, West Virginia
What do you do at the Zoo? I’m the Librarian/Media Specialist. I work with almost every department in the Zoo to answer research requests, organize digital information, and provide educational technology and equipment. I also answer Zoo and animal related questions from the general public and participate in a Metroparks Historical
Preservation Taskforce.
What was the first Zoo job you ever had? This is it!
Favorite animal: Giraffe
Favorite part of the Zoo: I love the view from above the east pool of the Savanna Range in the African Elephant Crossing exhibit.
Why I work at the Zoo: Where else could I work with such a great group of animals?
Best thing about living in Northeast Ohio (other than the Zoo, of course!): An awesome local music scene with amazing venues like the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern.
A funny thing happened at the Zoo: Sometimes people don’t realize exactly what they’re asking for. Requests from the public often include questions like, “Can I get all the information you have on elephants?” We then need to ask them more specific questions to narrow it down, because “all” the information we have on elephants is quite a lot!
One animal characteristic you wish you could have and why: I wish I could graze like a zebra so that I could both snack and mow my lawn at the same time.
