In continuing our celebration of National Zoo Keeper Week, we thought we'd share some tips with you straight from our animal keepers' mouths on how you can become a zoo keeper.
How to become a Zoo Keeper:
- Get experience working with animals. More than just having pets at your home, try getting a part-time job or volunteering at veterinary offices, zoos, animal shelters or farms.
- Education is extremely important! Study biology, zoology, primatology or animal science.
- Most zoos, veterinary offices and even animal shelters offer internships. Get an internship and get more hands-on experiences with animals.
- Most importantly of all, LOVE animals! Have an enthusiasm, strong interest and passion for working with and caring for animals. This job is hard work, but incredibly rewarding.

About National Zoo Keeper Week
Supported by the American Association of Zoo Keepers, National Zoo Keeper Week (July 15-21, 2012) is observed each year during the third week of July. It’s a time to reflect on the dedication, commitment and professionalism of our animal care staff and the large role they play in animal conservation and education.
Be a Keeper for a Day at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!
Similar to a job shadowing program, participants will spend the day with animal professionals in the Zoo's Conservation Education Division for a one-of-a-kind experience. CLICK HERE for more information and to register.
