Congratulations to Michael P. from Seven Hills, OH for his winning photo of one of the Zoo’s adorable meerkat kits.
Congratulations to amateur photographer Michael P. from Seven Hills for capturing this young meerkat, one of three kits born to the Zoo's resident meerkat mom in August 2012.

Like their counterparts in the wild, the Zoo's breeding male and female and their three oldest offspring kept the three kits out of sight, hidden in their tunnel den below their African Elephant Crossing exhibit for a number of weeks.

The Zoo's meerkat exhibit is quiet now -- but fear not, come spring, the meerkats will once again create a lot of oohs and ahhs from visitors of all ages. In the meantime, be sure to visit  elephants Willy, Martika, Moshi, Shenga and Kallie inside African Elephant Crossing.

Did you know
. . . a group of meerkats is called a mob?

Did you know
. . . a meerkat typically gives birth to between one and five kits?

Did you know . . . meerkats are native to southern Africa, including Angola, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa?

Thank you to everyone who submitted photos in the Zoo’s 2012 Photo Safari contest. We received  hundreds of  entries which will keep our panel of judges busy for quite some time.

Winners will be chosen and notified by phone and email by mid-November.  All winning photos will be posted on the Zoo's website and on display inside the Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building in 2013.

Special thanks to Discount Drug Mart and First Merit Foundation for their generous support. We look forward to another great Photo Safari contest beginning April 1, 2013.
