Echidnas Now on Exhibit... What ARE they?

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo announces the arrival of two new echidnas, one male and one female, now on exhibit. On Friday, February 29, 2008, they were released into the koala exhibit at Gum Leaf Hideout in the Zoo's Australian Adventure. Watch our behind-the-scenes video on these very unique and elusive animals.

During their time in quarantine in Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine, the two echidnas underwent medical exams to determine their gender and overall health and we caught it all on camera. Watch our behind-the-scenes video for an introduction to these very unusual animals, an overview of the health procedure and information on where and when you can catch a glimpse of them at the Zoo's Gum Leaf Hideout (read the news release).

For some reason, I thought they were much smaller. I've looked every time I've been to the Zoo and have NEVER seen the echidnas. But that doesn't mean I won't keep trying. This time, I'll be looking for something bigger. :)
